Impact of An Aging Population in US - Global Health Issue

Discuss the impact of an aging population on the long-term care system. What strains will be placed on the system in 10 years, 20 years, and beyond? How can healthcare administrators prepare for these increased demands?

Answers :

The aging population comes with numerous challenges as some of the notable health care complications include hypertension, diabetes, and cardiac pathologies. The USA is facing a sharp increase in the aging population as highlighted by population statistics. As a result of this aging population, the most important challenge that long-term care system would face is an individual resource and patient load (ahcancal.org, 2011). Speaking in a concise manner, each patient is likely to consume more resources over a longer period of time. The socio-ecological transition would lead to a drastic change in the supply and demand of human workforce, as well as goods and services. This change is likely to prevail over two decades and more. Utilisation of ambulatory health care and hospital activities would increase at a fast rate. Constant utilization rates of the human workforce would imply that considerable strain would be placed to recruit more professionals in care systems (Woerkom 2010).

The healthcare administrators must prepare for the increased demands in an appropriate manner. Firstly, they need to change recruitment and retention strategies. This needs the acceptance of certificates and qualifications from foreign countries. Measures are to be taken for providing adequate training to professionals to meet the high demands of services. Further, there is a need of integrating advanced healthcare technologies into the healthcare system across domains. Reorganisation of tasks among different professionals would also act as a suitable strategy that administrators can consider. Further, administrators must approve more flexible working hours for professionals to make improvements in the working conditions (Sultz & Young, 2014). My adapting these changes the administrators would be in a better position to address the concerns discussed above.
